We had two key aims for this product: reliability and portability. Tyremen needed an e-commerce solution that required minimal maintenance, achieved excellent up-time, and could be reused for more than one online store.
As we've said before, modular is our middle name (well, if we had a middle name). So for this project we developed a modular framework that can be used across multiple projects and rethemed for different brands. This approach required thorough planning, savvy information architecture and an agile, transparent development strategy, but was ultimately cost-effective for us and for our client. It meant that they could also use the platform for their sister company Jungle Tyres with very little extra work.
Fasten your seatbelts
The Tyremen and Jungle Tyres e-commerce platforms needed to be able to integrate with TyreSoft, which is one of the tyre industry’s leading cloud-based software solutions for retailers, wholesalers and online sellers. This integration was essential, but not entirely straightforward (when is it ever?). But plugging in Tyresoft to our framework enables stock control management, sales order processing, and purchasing. The framework also integrates the UK Tyre Network, allowing easy access to tyre fitting networks.
What does this mean for other tyre sellers who are looking to work with us? That we can plug into the UK Tyre Network, offering access to fitters across the country, and that we can integrate with other tyre networks too should you be using a different cloud-based software system.
A smooth ride
The Tyremen and Jungle Tyres websites are fully PCI compliant, meaning that, in terms of security at least, they can run alongside the e-commerce big boys like Amazon. Stability and security are always the primary technical considerations at BLISS. And, thanks to layers of intelligent caching, it’s super quick. In fact, we think it’s one of the fastest tyre websites on the whole of the internet! Or at least our technical director does.
"Migration was the biggest issue because we were dealing with inconsistent data. Product data can be labelled in different ways. For example, Tyresoft will have alternative information to what we would expect. So, we needed to decode it in order to point one piece of data to the other, and vice versa."
Making tyres sexy
Sure, tyres aren't the most exciting type of rubber, but BLISS have always enjoyed the challenge of creating great looking interfaces, regardless of subject matter. Although behind the scenes the code for Tyremen and Jungle Tyres is very similar, the two websites differ massively when it comes to look and feel. We have no interest in churning out a string of generic shop sites that look identical and soulless; creative will always lie at the heart of our work.
Oh, and it goes without saying that it’s fully responsive. Check out tyremen.co.uk on your mobile. Looks beautiful, no?
Every project is an opportunity to learn
With Tyremen, we took a completely new approach to Drupal theming. Then the Jungle Tyres build went even smoother as we took the best parts over. Working in parallel, our technical team tidied up both sites, refining the code to smooth over any hiccups in the initial duplication.
Though simple looking on the surface, dealing with tyres isn’t as easy as it seems. There were many in-depth discussions between the commercial, creative, technical and marketing teams that paved the way to producing a solid platform that not only offers unlimited future flexibility, but meets the external project goals.
It is this persistent close communication between the full team that allows BLISS to consistently develop well rounded products, constantly improve, and continuously please our clients.
